While I wait for "real" pochade box from Santa, I went ahead with the DIY approach. $5 for a decent size wooden cigar box, some found paint stir sticks, a 3/4 inch T nut for mounting on a tripod, cut to fit piece of plexiglass for the palette, plate hanger for the panel support, and finally tension hinges to allow support of the panel in "painting" mode. This can support up to an 8x10" panel easily. Most expensive component were the tension hinges (available from Amazon at approx $20). I believe all told I completed this for under $30! And it gets the job done!
